new patient exams and dental check ups at tooth.
What is a New Patient Exam (also known as Dental Check-Up):
A New Patient Exam is done via a qualified Dentist - the Dentist will examine and do a dental check-up on your your whole mouth - looking at your teeth and gums. They will take standard x rays (called bitewings) and will look to see if you have any dental issues, such as cavities, decay, gum inflammation or anything else. They will also do what is known as charting, where they do an audit of your teeth which will be logged on your patient record - looking at what is going on for each tooth. If there is any dental treatment advised, then at the end of the session, they will produce a Treatment Plan for you - this will list all of the recommended treatments and the price of each, along with options for treatments (if applicable), for example - different materials for crowns etc. But, don’t worry, you are under no obligation at all to proceed with any or all of these dental treatments at tooth, it is entirely up to you and there is no pressure or upselling ever. Ultimately, our Dentists are here to advise and make sure you have the best dental treatments and to inform you of your current situation and all the options available to you. They can also give advice on tooth whitening and other aesthetic dental treatments too.
About Treatment Plans:
Following your visit, if you need any further suggested treatments, you will receive an email containing a Treatment Plan. On this plan will be a breakdown of recommended treatments and a plan of what should be done at each appointment. At tooth we have no hidden costs, so all of the prices for your proposed dental treatment will be listed upfront, and we won’t change them once quoted (treatment plan prices are valid for 3 months), so even if something has gone up in those 3 months, you’ll still pay the price quoted! As mentioned above, it is entirely up to you if you would like to proceed with any or all of the proposed treatments but we have to advise you of our recommendations as this is a regulatory requirement. Also, its very often that patients visit us and they don’t need any further treatments - so we will never put anything on your plan that isn’t necessary or isn’t something that you have asked for information on (eg. whitening).
Please note - New Patient Exams and Emergency Exams are different treatments - in simple terms a New Patient Exam appointment is not for anyone in pain or having just had a dental emergency that is causing concern. No treatment will be done at all at a New Patient Exam - all treatment will be done at following visits. If you would like to find out more about our Emergency Dental Appointments click here.
Top 5 reasons for having a New Patient Exam or Dental Check-Up treatment:
To maintain a healthy mouth and gums - known as keeping good oral hygiene. All patients are recommended to see a Dentist for a check up (and a Hygienist for a dental hygiene treatment) at least once every 6 months (unless advised otherwise by a Dentist).
To prevent bad oral health or loss or damage to your teeth
To avoid risk of gum disease
To save money - in dentistry prevention is significantly cheaper than cure. Regular check ups mean less major treatments - for example, a small filling is cheaper than waiting until the decay is so bad that you need a large filling! And saving a tooth is much cheaper than extracting and then replacing a lost tooth through an implant or a bridge etc.
To feel great - knowing that your are looking after your teeth and gums will make you feel fresher and you can smile with confidence.

What should I expect if I am having a New Patient Exam or Dental Check-Up appointment at tooth in London?
If you’ve booked for a New Patient Exam appointment at tooth you should aim to arrive around 10 minutes before the appointment start time. When you check in, our lovely reception team will ask a few details to complete your patient record, and then give you a touch-pad to complete a new patient medical history form. This medical form will contain important questions about your health and any past or ongoing medical issues. This is for your safety. Once completed you will be collected by your Dentist and taken through to the surgery. Our Dentist team is caring, gentle, and all very well experienced. They all have your dental health and comfort as a priority. Once seated the Dentist will ask you some questions and then look in your mouth. They will do what is known as charting as they look at all of your teeth, and the nurse will help with this also.
They will take standard x rays if required (these are included in the price) and investigate further if they see any potential issues, such as decay etc. They will discuss any concerns or worries you may have. Afterwards they will issue a treatment plan, as detailed above.
If you are booked for a recall/regular Dental Check-Up, then depending on how recently your last visit was, they may take new x rays or adjust the charting and you will need to confirm or update your medical history - again, this is for your safety. As per the New Patient Exam, they will advise if any treatment is necessary and issue a Treatment Plan if required, and discuss any concerns or worries you may have.
